Treatment of bursitis is usually simple and includes:
Rest and immobilize the affected area
Application of ice to reduce swelling
When a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) and naproxen (Aleve, others), to relieve pain and reduce inflammation
Sometimes your doctor may recommend physical therapy or exercises to strengthen muscles in the region. In addition, the doctor may inject a corticosteroid into the bursa to relieve inflammation. This treatment usually gives pain relief fast, and in many cases, one injection is all you need.
If the bursitis is due to an infection, you need to take antibiotics. Sometimes the bag is drained surgically, but only rarely is surgical removal of the bag must be affected.
