Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Overview

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition where a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins of the body, usually in the legs. Deep vein thrombosis can cause pain in the legs, but often without any symptoms.

Deep vein thrombosis can develop if you sit still for a long time, like when you are traveling by plane or car, or if you have certain medical conditions that affect blood clotting.

Deep vein thrombosis is a serious disease due to a blood clot that forms in the vein can break off, travel through your bloodstream and lodge in the lungs, blocking blood flow (pulmonary embolism).
