There are no proven strategies to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, but you can minimize the stress on your hands and wrists, by taking the following precautions:
Reduce your energy and relax your grip. Most people use more force than necessary to accomplish many tasks involving their hands. If your work involves a cash register, for example, press the buttons gently. For prolonged handwriting, use a large enclosure with an oversized, soft grip adapter and fluid ink. This way you will not have to take the pen tightly or press harder on the paper.
Take frequent breaks. Give your hands and wrists a break by gently stretching and folding them regularly. Other tasks where possible. If you use equipment that vibrates or that requires you to carry a large amount of force, taking breaks is even more important.
Attention to form. Avoid bending your wrist all the way up or down. A relaxed location is the best. If you use the keyboard, hold at elbow level or slightly lower.
Improve your posture. Incorrect posture can cause your shoulders to roll forward. When your shoulders are in this position, your neck muscles and shoulder shortened, compressing nerves in the neck. This can affect your wrists, fingers and hands.
Keep your hands warm. You are more likely to develop hand pain and stiffness, if you work in a cold environment. If you can not control the temperature in the workplace, wear fingerless gloves that keep your hands and wrists warm.
