Treatment Of Bad Breath (Halitosis)

The treatment of bad breath can vary, depending on the cause. If bad breath is caused by a health condition, your dentist probably try to help control this condition. Other measures may include mouthwashes and certain toothpastes or dental treatment of dental diseases.

Mouthwash and toothpaste. If bad breath is caused by a buildup of bacteria (plaque) on your teeth, your dentist may recommend a mouthwash that kills bacteria. Research shows that those containing cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorhexidine can prevent those with the production of odors that cause bad breath. Other active ingredients such as chlorine dioxide and zinc are good for neutralizing odors from bacteria of the products. Your dentist may also recommend a toothpaste containing an antibacterial agent to kill bacteria that cause plaque buildup.

Treatment of dental disease. If your dentist determines that you have gum disease, you may be referred to a periodontist (gum specialist). The disease causes the gums to separate from the teeth, leaving a lot of money to accumulate bacteria that cause odor. Sometimes, these bacteria can be removed by professional cleaning. Your dentist may also recommend to replace defective dental restorations, which can be a breeding ground for bacteria.
