ACNE SPOT |
Comedones (whiteheads and blackheads) are created when the openings of hair follicles become clogged and blocked with oil secretions, dead skin cells and bacteria sometimes. When comedones (kom-uh-DOE-neze) are open to the skin surface are called blackheads because of the dark side of the plugs in the hair follicles. When comedones are closed, they are called white - slightly raised, skin color bumps.
The papules are small bumps that signal inflammation or infection of hair follicles. Papules may be red and painful.
The pustules are red, tender bumps with white pus at their tips.
Nodules are large, solid, painful lumps under the skin. They form a buildup of secretions deep within hair follicles.
The cysts are painful, pus-filled lumps under the skin surface. These boil-like infections can cause scarring.
When to see a doctor
Acne is usually not a serious medical condition. But you may want to seek medical treatment from a dermatologist for pimples or inflamed cysts to avoid persistent scars or other damage to your skin. If the acne scars and may have left it affects your social relationships and self-esteem, you can also ask a dermatologist if your acne can be controlled or if your scar can be reduced.
