As with other mental disorders, the cause of borderline personality disorder are not fully understood.
The factors that seem to play a role include:
Genetics. Some studies of twins and families of personality disorders can be inherited.
Environmental factors. Many people suffering from borderline personality disorder have a history of child abuse, neglect and separation from their parents and relatives.
Brain abnormalities. Some studies have shown changes in certain brain regions involved in emotion regulation, impulsivity and aggression. In addition, certain brain chemicals that help regulate mood, such as serotonin may not function properly.
Most likely, a combination of these issues results in borderline personality disorder.
