An allergy starts when the immune system mistakes a normally harmless substance for a dangerous invader. The immune system produces antibodies that are always looking for your particular allergen. When you are exposed to the allergen in the future, these antibodies will release a number of immune system chemicals such as histamine that cause allergy symptoms.
Common triggers of allergy are:
Airborne allergens like pollen, animal dander, dust mites and mold
Some foods, including peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, eggs and milk
Insect bites, stings like a bee or wasp stings
The drugs, particularly penicillin or penicillin-based antibiotics
Latex or other substances you touch, which may cause allergic skin reactions
