Traumatic brain injury usually results from a violent blow or blows to the head causes the brain to collide with the inside of the skull. An object penetrates the skull, like a bullet or a fragment of skull, can cause traumatic brain injury.
Mild traumatic brain injury can cause temporary dysfunction of brain cells. More serious head injury can cause damage bruises, torn tissue, blood and other physical changes in the brain that can cause long-term complications or death.
