Avoidant Personality Disorder Overview

Avoidant personality disorder(or anxious personality disorder)] is a personality disorder recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Handbook A person characterized by a pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, extreme sensitivity to negative evaluation and prevention of social interactions.

People with avoidant personality disorder often see themselves as socially inept or personally unpleasant, and avoid social interaction for fear of being ridiculed, humiliated, rejected or disliked. Avoidant personality disorder is usually first noticed as an adult. Emotional neglect of the child and peer rejection are both associated with an increased risk of AVPD.

It is debatable whether avoidant personality disorder is a disorder separate from generalized social phobia, and it is claimed that some people who are simply different conceptualizations of the disorder itself, with avoidant personality disorder may represent a more severe form. This is stated as a generalized social phobia and avoidant personality disorder is similar to the diagnostic criteria, and we have the same reason, the subjective experience, of course, treatment and the same personality traits such as shyness background .
